Durham’s Grocery Named 2016 KGCSA Grocer of the Year, Award Presented by Lipari Foods.
Frankfort, KY – November 29, 2016 - Joe, Robin and Craig Crain, owners of Durham’s Grocery in Stanford, KY were honored with the 2016 Grocer of the Year Award, presented by Lipari Foods, during the Kentucky Grocers and Convenience Stores Association, Inc. (KGCSA) 75th Annual Awards event.
Joe, Robin and Craig Crain owner/operators of Durham’s Grocery in Stanford, KY were honored by attendees of the 75th KGCSA Annual Awards event held on Wednesday November 16, 2016 at Talon Vineyards and Winery in Lexington, KY. The awards luncheon was made possible by the gracious sponsorships provided by Circle K - Midwest Division, Farmer’s Tobacco of Cynthiana and S. Abraham & Sons.
In 1957, Hurl Durham, Joe Crain’s step father, and his wife Peggy, Joe Crain’s mother, opened a gas station in Stanford, KY. Who could have known that in 2017, the business that Hurl and Peggy started will be celebrating 60 years in business – an exceptional accomplishment for any business and especially an independent grocery store. The gas station was successful and soon the Durham’s started selling a selection of grocery products in addition to the usual gas station products. As grocery sales grew, the business was moved to their current location that included two automotive service bays and 10,000 square feet of grocery and perishable products.
Joe Crain had been away from Stanford serving in the Navy, where he met his wife Robin, and in 1977 they moved to Stanford and started working for Hurl and Peggy. The business continued to grow and in 1987 Joe and Robin purchased the store from Hurl and Peggy and began what will be in 2017, their 40 years as successful independent grocery store owner/operators.
Joe & Robin realized in 1991 that closing the service station operations and focusing on groceries was the best way to continue growing their business. As the business grew, they also added an additional 2,500 square feet of selling space offering expanded deli, meat and produce offerings.
The Crain’s motto of “Big enough to accommodate, small enough to appreciate” has been the foundation for serving their customers. Bob Bravard, National Director of Convenience Store Sales for Lipari Foods and presenting sponsor of the 2016 KGCSA Grocer of the Year Award, read glowing social media reviews from Durham’s Grocery customers. Ranging from exceptional customer service to the best plate lunch available anywhere, customers in the Stanford area do love their locally owned independent grocery store.
Upon receiving the award from Bob Bravard (Lipari Foods) and 2016 KGCSA Chairman David Bridgers (Thorntons, Inc.), Joe Crain thanked the KGCSA and told luncheon attendees that, “It takes partnerships with outstanding suppliers like as Lipari Foods and Laurel Grocery Company for independent grocers to survive and thrive in today’s crowded grocery marketplace.”
Moving forward, Joe and Robin’s son Craig is now implementing social/digital marketing programs and is preparing to launch an online shopping program to extend the digital reach of the store.
On behalf of the KGCSA membership that includes retailers and suppliers, we congratulate Durham’s Grocery and the Crain Family for their success!
